Community outreach
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Newcomers and Neighbors' Club serves the community by organizing collections for local charities and by providing service opportunities to their members. Most of the collections occur at our major events and members are made aware of service opportunities occasionally throughout the year.
We serve a variety of charities, foundations, groups and individuals in need locally and abroad. Some causes and charities we have supported in the past and will continue to support in the future:
· Book Drives: The Newcomers’ Club has collected books and donated to the King's Daughters Day School in Plainfield. We have also collected books for Overlook Hospital and doubled the children’s book collection at the hospital library.
· Cancer Research: We have helped raise funds and collect needed items for cancer foundations like Joshua's Closet, Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Cancer Research.
· Color-A-Smile: At Fanny Wood Day and the major Newcomers’ Events, children have colored coloring pages from Color-A-Smile to give to those in need.
· Have a Heart Blood Drive: The Newcomers' Club has hosted community blood drives at the New Jersey Blood Services blood bank in Fanwood.
· Holiday Mail for Heroes: The Newcomers’ Club children decorated holiday cards that were sent to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world.
· Halloween Costume donation drive for Children's Specialized Hospital: Each fall we collect new and gently used Halloween costumes for the children at Children's Specialized Hospital.
· Operation Shoebox: We have donated supplies for care packages to be shipped to U.S. troops based in Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East countries.
· Pajama Program: This Fall, the Newcomers' Club provided new pajamas, new books, and monetary donations to the Pajama Program of NJ. The donations helped Union County children.
· Project Protect: We have donated clothes and other supplies to Union County’s only Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter for battered women and their children.
· Scotch Plains Food Bank: The Newcomers’ Club has held collections for the Scotch Plains Food Bank (located at St. Bartholomew’s) and appeals to members to prepare laundry baskets filled with Thanksgiving meal items for local families in need.
· Refugee Assistance Partners: The Newcomers' Club collected donations of new and used winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves for refugees new to Union County.
